I'm going to try and be much better about blogging... really! Promise!

I am fortunate to have so many friends in the burlesque industry, it makes it so much easier to deal with the drama that comes with the territory. I have a great friend, Red Snapper, who has discussed with me career goals, and achieving them. I have realized that this is something i need to get on!

My goals for 2011 -

-Dance outside of Texas in at least 5 states. (as of right now, I"ve danced in two!)
-Headline at least three major shows, one being in Dallas! (2nd part is done!)
-Grow my makeup/hair side. (I will be attending IMATS in June.)
-Do all this while keeping some semblance of a personal life. (HA!)

Let's see how the journey goes, eh?

The Other Side of Sketch[y's]

Most of you out there in internet land are aware that I co-produce the Denton chapter of Dr. Sketchy’s Anti- Art School along with the lovely Ms. Vivienne Vermuth; however I won’t be writing to you as the producer, no, instead yours truly will give you the dish on being a featured model! To give you the full impression of my experience it is important to be aware of the things that my production gig usually entails…

1. Heavy lifting

2. Phone calls; lots and lots of phone calls

3. Information relay between the venue and my fellow producer/crew

4. Running errands; lots and lots of errands

5. Promotion, through rain or sleet or…you get the idea…

So you can imagine when my partner in crime booked one of my best mates (the fabulous hoop dancer Syn Tactic) and me for the February MAD Magazine Spy vs. Spy themed show, that I jumped at the opportunity! While modeling may be a lot of fun and games it actually takes quite a lot of planning, especially if you’re catering to the high standard of the Denton Sketchy’s! Syn and I were determined to make it a huge success.

We worked weeks in advance coordinating our opposing ensembles, creating and crafting our own props, making our own spy themed music mix for the show, and practicing pose after pose to get it just right! When you’re honoring one of the best and most prolific publications of all time, let’s just say there’s no room for error!

The session day finally came, and Syn and I spent most of it doing last minuet preparations and bubbling over with excitement! The line-up for the show was a smash; we had chair routines, hoop routines, duets, a very yummy human sketchpad, and the twisty temptress Scarlet Rose Royale perform some burlesque contortion! The modeling was also a blast (pardon the pun); Syn with her dy-no-mite, me with my bomb…we were totally out for each other on that stage, just as the spies would want! Another element that just made the night was the stellar audience that came out to Banter Café. Loads of photographers, sketchers, water colorists, you name the medium they were there that night.

I have tell you though, the best work out of my life was keeping those 20 minuet poses held, and I’m sure Syn (and every other Sketchy’s model) would agree with me. It’s one thing to do photo shoots where you’re constantly moving and shifting but this modeling took me back to my “glory days” as a live figure art model. All in all it was an incredible session, with lots of outstanding feedback and participation, and I loved every minuet of that small, sketchy stage.

The Politics of Posing Nude

I am an aspiring pin-up model from the Houston area, and am struggling with the idea of posing nude for the camera. I have had a few publications, but nothing too notable and am wondering if a nude set would jumpstart my career? Have you posed nude? What would you do in my shoes? Thanks!

Well hello there Ms. Clothed!

You’ve just asked an age-old modeling question my dear, the trouble is only you can be the judge. I will offer my best advice, but it’ll be you in the end who decides if the bra should fall!

First off of course you should be hesitant about disrobing for the camera, after all it’s mighty hard to un-do nude photographs especially if your portfolio is predominantly on-line (as most models are now). Don’t ever let anyone, peer models included, try and tell you it’s not a big deal. It is, it’s your body. Do you have a fall back plan should your modeling career be unfortunately short lived? Does this fall back plan allow for the acceptance of nude (even artistic) shots being taken? If you comfortably believe this won’t affect your livelihood down the road and you are warming up to the idea of being comfortable in your skin, I think you’ll know what’s best for you.

To answer another of your questions, yes, I have posed nude for the camera. Before becoming increasingly active in the burlesque and pin-up scenes I was working at my university as a freelance nude art model. Then I moved progressively into my current realms of performance and modeling which consist of more freelance Artsleaze projects (i.e. Suicide Girls aspirations) and shooting for friends and myself to showcase mine or their fashionable creations (Art With Latex, Dollskin Designs, MUAH portfolios etc). I find myself growing in comfort every day with my body, and have a much deeper appreciation for it. Since I’ve been involved with very progressive and like-minded photographers and designers I find posing nude for a project to be as non-threatening as posing in a full on parka. I count myself very fortunate to be able to work in such safe spaces with such amazing people. Which leads me to my second point…

Know your project leaders (photographers, stylists, lighting techs, muah staff etc)! The more you know about them, the better. Find out their reputation, ask questions, and always ALWAYS get specific agreements in writing! Only sign a model release form if you are completely comfortable with the means and uses those people have for the images you’ve helped create with your body. Also be safe; shoot with a friend or manager/agent. Bring your own contractual documents, be prepared in general, it not only protects you but makes you look professional.

Long story short, don’t be afraid of yourself or your potential, but also don’t throw caution to the wind. That little voice in your pretty head is there for a reason. Listen to it when approaching modeling projects that involve nude work. Your body is an empowering vessel; so treat it with respect and appreciation!

VIVA LAS VEGAS...

Well, I'm gonna try, anyways. Go big or go home, I say, and that will be my motto for 2010. I have had quite a 2009, and I'm ready for what's in store this year.

I already have so many amazing models for 2010's Dr. Sketchy's Denton - from local newbies like Jade Pearl and Bubbles von BonBon, to dominatrix diva Athena Fatale, fetish lovely Courtney Crave, bellydacner Michelle Manx, and my favorite LA girl, Red Snapper! So so much to come in the next few months... I can hardly stand it!

I wil also be a performer at the 2010 Dallas Burlesque Festival, as well as be featured in the Dallas Burlesque Fest Calendar! This will be my second year performing this festival, and believe me, you won't want to miss it!

I also already have quite a few travelling gigs underway, such as many shows in Austin and talk of shows in New York, Chicago and LA! EXCITING! I will also be debuting a new burlesque collective in DFW in January... stay tuned for that. ;)

So, while you ring in the new year, keep watch on the Viva Las Vegas website, and when jan 1st rolls around, be sure and vote for me to perform at this festival! It would be an honor to attend and perform, so help a lady out!

Long Time No Tease!

Sorry I've been absent for some while folks, but burly-q has been busting at the seams lately! It seems like every day there's a new costume to make, routine to practice, panties to wrangle etc etc! So here's a small update, and promise of things to come (off)!

As far as shows go, Vivienne and I have two coming up that are sure to delight! The first show, the second annual Texas Equal Access Fund Burlesque Benefit "Under the Bra Top" will be Saturday Nov. 21st (Tomorrow night), burlesque starts late, so get there at 10pm to secure a spot! It's only $5 for great performers, and a worthy cause!

The next show is sure to be a real holiday treat! The Holiday edition of Bewitching Burlesque put on by the fabulous GlamAmour and Pixie O'Kneel has been a long time in the making, and you better get your tickets early because this is a sell-out show if ever I've seen one! Held on Dec. 5th doors at 8pm, at Cafe Excuses in Deep Ellum, "Gifts & Garters"will be an event to remember! I hear tell that there will also be some great vintage shopping opportunities as well as a chance to get Angela Ryan to sign her cover of PinCurl magazine!

My lovely readers, you know that back in September I went to the NOLA Burlesque Fest with my friend Cayla of Decadent Dame Designs, and we had a BLAST! We met so many wonderful people, and it gave me determination that I WILL perform there next year! One gal I didn't get to meet, because she was just so darn BUSY! She performed in the Queen of Burlesque competition, as well as the Late Night bash with her new troope, AND the Sunday night BustOut Show!

Lola van Ella is an international burlesque singer, dancer, producer and instructor. In St. Louis she produces the St. Louis Burlesque Showcase and runs her troupe The Bon-Bons and their monthly retro, live band revue. She is also the instructor for her weekly, "Everything Burlesque" classes and has been teaching for nearly 3 years. Lola has performed for thousands of people, from coast to coast and has recently finished a tour of Europe and received 2nd runner up in the Queen of Burlesque competition in the New Orleans Burlesque Festival. All of this and more has garnered this saucy chanteuse a lot of attention and the tagline, "The Derriere Beyond Compare!"

1.) What got you into burlesque?

I usually say that I didn't get into burlesque, but that burlesque got into me! I have always performed as a singer, actress, dancer and voiceover artist. However, about 6 years ago I was asked by a local theater company to sing an original, saucy little song and choreograph a reverse strip to it. It was like I was doing burlesque without knowing it. I hear this a lot actually in the burlesque community. Then about a year later, I was performing in a jazz cabaret and a friend of mine told me about a new show that had started here in St. Louis called The Alley Cat Revue. I went to check it out, and saw a really rough show with no emcee, very few lights, basic costumes, but a lot of potential. I started the next week. Of course, the show got better and better, and became the only weekly burlesque revue in St. Louis for over 4 years.

2.) How long have you been performing? Been a producer?

Performing most of my life, but doing the burlesque, strip thing for about 5 years. I've been producing a little over 3.

3.) What do you find most difficult about wearing different "hats"? What's the most rewarding?

Remembering which hat I'm wearing! :) It can be really hard at times, because I have to wear the teacher hat, the producer hat, and the performer/peer hat, and often have to switch them frequently, some times in the course of an evening. I have to try to keep really solid lines drawn. When it's business time, I have to be in charge and direct and produce and lead, but shortly after that, hopefully, it's cocktail time and then we're all just gossipy and flirty and lovey with each other. Luckily, I work with some amazing people who really seem to understand those lines very well. I am also fortunate to work with and have a troupe that is full of lovely ladies I would call family. That is incredibly rewarding. Also, getting to see my students perform after months of hard work and perseverance is really inspiring and fantastic.

4.) You were a featured performer at the first annual NOLA Burlesque fest this pst September! What was it like dancing in the Queen showcase?

Nerve wracking! I am usually not a nervous person (stressed, at times, yes, but not usually nervous), but the day of the show was so intense for me! I have never had nerves like that. On top of that, I woke up really early for a radio interview that day, then had to rehearse with the band, then taught a workshop, and then had to immediately get all gussied up for the show. I thought I would be sick! However, it was also one of the most amazing and rewarding experiences of my life. I also got to spend time with some of the most incredible and beautiful women I've ever met. It was such an honor to share the stage with every single one of them; that itself was reward enough. But then to place with Catherine D'Lish and my dear friend, Perle Noire! Wow! I cried like a bride :)

5.) How did you decide to open up the STL charter of r. Sketchy's?

Well, this is actually the 2nd incarnation of STL Sketchy's. It was originally started a couple years ago by some lovely people, and I was the first model and helped them get it off the ground. After about 6 months or so, the original people had to stop running it, and so Sketchy's St. Louis kind of died for a bit. About a year ago, my friend, and local artist Tom Huck of Evil Prints decided to bring it back. I can't really draw to save my life (unless of course they're crayon drawings of flowers and fairies and suns wearing sunglasses), but I also can't stand seeing something so cool just stagnate. I figured if no one else would start it, I would! We now have monthly sessions at Evil Prints, which is an amazing place to hold a drawing club, and we're having a ball!

5.) You are such a busy gal! How do you keep your head on straight? Tell us one of your secrets to sanity!

I am so lucky to have wonderful, real people around me that help keep me sane. I also take lots of walks in the park where I live. I definitely believe in the power of endorphins, and fresh air really does wonders. Teaching my weekly dance class really centers me too. It's always fun, and I always leave renewed in my resolve and passion to keep going.

6.)Do you believe in magic?

Why, yes! Sometimes, I believe that I am magic and that I have mystical seductive powers, and that throwing around glitter and rhinestones is like waving a magic wand. ;)

Vinny's Q&A: Intimate Wear and How to Wear it!

Could you please point me in the right direction of some good retailers, and what kind I should invest in? Thanks!

Panty-less but not penny-less

Hello there Panty-less,

First off great question! There are a lot of misguided foundation wear shoppers out there, who are under the impression that anything goes with everything! There are some basic rules that should always be followed when shopping for new undergarments, and you can quote me on this, but the most important investment pieces are your brassieres, knickers, controls, and stockings.

So let’s start with brassieres, depending on your personal tastes you can choose a very vintage “bullet” or “torpedo” ultimately teardrop shaped bra to accompany your vintage duds or go for a very modern rounder, fuller “balloon” shaped cup. The choice is yours darling. I personally have a variety of both depending on the occasion and my outfit. It’s perfectly fine to switch it up, go with whatever makes you feel comfortable and sexy. Remember this is a personal decision, one that you should really dig on!

Next we’ll discuss knickers, or panties. You should always maintain three varieties of panties: practical, pretty, and performance. And yes I came up with that little ditty all on my own. Practical meaning comfortable, and probably cotton, this type is totally acceptable under those hot high-waisted clam diggers, or your favorite pair of Levis, just make sure you don’t have any visible lines, it completely destroys the illusion! The second type, pretty, are the ones you wear out on the town that make you feel all dolled up! These most likely have a ruffle or strategically placed bows, etc. Pretty undies give you an air of “come hither” and empowerment, which no one can quite place their finger on (wink). The third and final type is perhaps the most important when it comes to burlesquing, and stage performance. Performance undies should always result from careful costume coordination. They should always reflect the style, tone, and functionality that your routine requires. For example if you’re going the route of a faux-merkin you probably don’t want to glue that sucker on a boy short, shoot for a nude g-string. While boy shorts, thongs, briefs, string-sided bikinis, and g-strings are all very much accepted and widely used; the employment of one of these styles should begin first with your comfort level. No one is going to blame you for going the route of comfort, especially not me. If you personally don’t feel g-strings are your thing, nix ‘em all together and go with what you want, just make sure to make a routine to match. Remember, choose what you feel sexiest in, and your confidence will show to the audience.

Oh the dreaded controls, these would be your girdles, corsets, corselettes, garter belts, and waist cinchers. These things are entirely optional, I cannot stress that enough. There’s a reason we’re in the 21^st century…i.e. we don’t have to subscribe to these methods anymore…okay there’s my public announcement, now onto advice should you choose to wear these. I personally go both ways (and yes in that way too). With some garments I feel it necessary to wear my (girdle bound) purple waist to thigh girdle, and with others a good belt goes a long way. I highly recommend fabric waist cinchers as an alternative to girdles if you are wearing control top pantyhose or if you want more mobility. Corselettes are an all in one shaper. They are like a bra, waist cincher, and girdle garter belt rolled together, this way you only have one additional layer under your ensemble, and you don’t have to worry about it slipping or moving with your other layers. Garter belts are a must if you are wearing thigh highs, first off that peek-a-boo look is to die for, secondly just using garters actually ruins your legs by cutting off circulation and gives you varicose veins earlier. Corsets, the mother of all shape wear, where to begin…unless you’re waist training you probably will want something flashy to just wear around as outerwear or the center piece of your routine’s costume. I highly recommend shelling out the extra dough if you’ve got it to have one custom made for you, this only enhances the fit and overall look you’ll have with it, believe you me it shows.

Last but certainly not least, stockings. Stockings are essential. Stockings are intrinsic. I cannot say enough positive things about these marvelously crafted little pieces of silk and nylon. However they can be sorely misused. The most popular styles of stockings used in performance are nude fishnets, and black thigh-highs. There is a reason for this, they look stunning on stage. Nothing is neater than thinking a dancer has no stockings on her legs and then seeing her do a toe-pull with nude fishnets. It’s all about illusion. Never, and I repeat NEVER wear control top pantyhose on a stage, there is absolutely no cause for this. Those are strictly for use under garments, which is why they have unsightly different colored tops and stitching…because no one is meant to see them! Thigh highs or full pantyhose without the top banding are stage worthy. Always coordinate your stockings with your ensemble. Don’t forget sometimes multiple pairs of stockings are needed, although this move is just a preference thing. Some dancers prefer to wear a pair of nude dancing tights underneath their knickers and then the showy pair on top that is to be removed. Also if you’re planning on wearing your knickers on top of your hose, make sure the tops of both of these garments match up, one should never be above the other! Remember the illusion bit? If they don’t match your skin tone though, I wouldn’t go the route of multiple layers. Then depending on your skin tone, you should seek out a pair that matches you best, even experiment with hand dying your stockings (because we all know that department stores cater to one skin tone mostly, and sadly it doesn’t represent the rest of the female population).

The Herstory of a Tempest

What’s 44DD-25-35, red all over and has a wicked sense of humor? Well if my title didn’t give it away, you’ve been living under that proverbial rock. Still need a hint? She’s one of the most beloved Ecdysiasts of all time! Okay now everyone together say, “ Tempest Storm”…see dolls, you’re catching on. Her name wasn’t always so provocative though, like many of our other well-known femme fatales of Burlesque, she too had a humble and obstacle-ridden beginning.

Tempest was actually born Annie Blanche Banks, in the very small town of Eastman, Georgia to sharecropping parents. A place she fled as soon as she could. She led a very tumultuous life up until her mid 20s; surviving constant sexual abuse at the hand of her father as well as being raped by a local gang. An event that was not easily overcome for Annie. Despite the violence around her, Annie eventually married and divorced twice and ended up leaving that town, to put the past behind her and she moved on to start a new life. One she decidedly would not live in fear of. Annie was a survivor.

In the 1950s she legally adopted her stage name, Tempest Storm. She landed gigs right away due to her winning personality; her sharp mind…and her “money makers” (as she affectionately referred to her own breasts). She got her start as a chorus girl before establishing herself in some memorable “c” films and on stage. She was most notable for the exquisite control she had over her body, and her natural flaming red hair. She called the Oakland Theatre home for a number of years. She also graced many stages in Las Vegas, and around the world for that matter performing her exceptional burlesque routines. She has adorned the covers of countless magazines for both women and men, and has become a cult icon due to her performances in films like Irving Klaw’s Teaserama (also featuring our beloved Bettie Page). Tempest is said to have had the longest burlesque performance career, spanning over an astounding 40 years! Tempest made it her mission to break down social taboos, and continued to disrobe into her 60s, embracing her figure and flaunting it with pride (Muller/Faris, Grindhouse). Even though she officially retired at the age of 60, she continues to make special appearances and one-time-only performances.

This dame knew what life was about, and chose to embrace it and live it to its fullest! She has inspired and empowered throngs of women ever since she began performing, and say what you will, she is still shakin’ it in her 80s! This is one icon of a woman, who did the unpopular thing by divorcing herself of not just her husbands but of her prescribed societal gender role too! Chicago IL- On September 25th, The Flaming Dames, Chicago’s premier concept burlesque troupe, are back to drain audiences dry and leave them screaming for more in their highly anticipated annual Halloween offering, and this time it’s a sequel: Vamp II. The wickedly sexy Veruca Venom, Scarlett Night, Fiona Fang, Missy Massacre, and Stella Strange return to sink their teeth into the night and become vicious blood sucking vampires hell bent on teasing and titillating rabid fans through the witching hour. And back in the fold to help lighten the mood are the Masters of Ceremony Mr. Vampire and Ms. Zombie bringing their signature comedy ‘stylings’ incorporating some of the scariest things since Joan Rivers. Halloween season’s getting started in Chicago, and The Flaming Dames in Vamp II will remind those who come out, just why you should be afraid of the dark.

The Flaming Dames in Vamp II marks the 13th production since 2003 for the venerable Chicago troupe and their fourth with a horror theme. In recent years the Dames have wowed audiences with the enormously successful Bump & Grindhouse, Hell’s Belles, and Vamp revues. "The concentration in Vamp II has definitely been on the choreography,” says Music Manager and contributing Choreographer Meagan Piccochi. “We’ve assembled some incredible talent that will be showcased.”

“Since the first Vamp in 2005, we’ve been taking it to the next level each year, pushing the envelope as far as possible,” explains Writer, Director, and Flaming Dames creator Leslie Kerrigan. Describing the attraction to horror-themed revues, Kerrigan adds, “there is something extremely compelling about the energy and chemistry generated by horror-themed burlesque that we’ve been able to harness.”

"I have a massive vampire obsession, so I am ecstatic to share that dark, sensual character with our fantastic audiences,” describes Ellen Domonkos, who plays a dual role as both choreographer and cast member.

The Flaming Dames in Vamp II is just one half of New Millennium Theatre Company's seasonal fun with the world premiere of Plans 1 Through 8 From Outer Space opening concurrently down the street at National Pastime Theater. NMTC have become the go-to ghouls for raising Halloween spirits on Chicago’s north side in recent years with the Flaming Dames’ continued success and stage productions including The Texas Chainsaw Musical, Manos: Rock Opera of Fate, Hack Slash: Stage Fright, and Evil Dead: The Musical.

The Flaming Dames in Vamp II runs Friday nights at 10:15 pm, September 25 through October 30 at The Spot, 4437 N. Broadway in Chicago. There will be no performance on Friday October 9. Michelle L'Amour

Michelle L'Amour, Miss Exotic World 2005, is an international burlesque sensation. She has performed for millions of people both in person and on TV, with her appearance on the 1st season of America's Got Talent. She resides in Chicago where she owes Studio L'amour, Chicago's only burlesque dance school. Michelle also runs the Chicago Starlets and produces shows with Franky Vivid. L'amour's newest project is Naked Girls Reading. It began in Chicago and has since opened in Denver and Dallas, and is soon coming to New York, New Orleans, and Key West.

1.) You have a degree in accounting, correct? How did you get into burlesque from there?

Yes, I have a degree in finance. Bleh. I suppose it's helping me now in my career because I own a production company and a dance school, but I much prefer the burlesque. I got into burlesque after college. I was approached by Franky Vivid to choreograph and dance in a burlesque show. I said, 'sure', not really knowing what it was all about. But, once I heard the music, I was hooked and knew exactly what to do. I have a background in classical dance, but they don't teach you this is those classes! I had been training for this my whole life before I even knew what it was.

2.) What performance/venue/location have/do you love to perform at? Why?

I love to perform at the Music Box Theater in Chicago. It's a gorgeous 750 seat, 80 yr. old movie house. It has a great red curtain and so much character. I love it!

3.) Tell us a little about a challenge you've faced this year, and about a great achievement!

I think one of my proudest moments was selling out the Music Box Theater this year. That audience was great and it felt awesome performing for them. The challenges I've had have been many. It's difficult to balance running a dance school, running a company, and traveling to pursue my own career. I think all is working out nicely now that I'm in a groove.

4.) Where do you get the inspiration for the creative ideas and events you come up with (ie Naked Girls Reading) ?

Well, I was reading naked at home and Franky found me and he realized he always had a thing for that image. Then we started joking about an event called Naked Girls Reading and we bought a website. We thought we would just do this on the internet and we sat on it for about 2 years. Then when I opened the studio, I thought it might be cool to do it as a live event. So, here we are! We started it at the studio in March of 2009. We thought we couldn't just keep this event to ourselves so we opened it up to other cities.

5.) I have the pleasure of meeting both you and Frankie back in March, and he's a doll! Tell us a little about your onstage wedding at MEW this year!

I was super nervous! I performed right before the wedding and I don't even know what happened in the performance, because I knew what was about to happen. The piece I did was on a giant heart and it ends with me getting all oiled up. In order to get married, I had to wipe the oil off me before I put on the wedding address. I made it a spectacle and had the Chicago Starlets wipe off my oil and dress me for the wedding while I was on stage. Then, I went to Franky and Miss Astrid married us in an eye patch. I was very happy for the comic relief because I'm super sappy and didn't want to cry the entire time. I cried a lot anyway because I can't help myself.

6.) Any goals for this year?

I would like to open more Naked Girls Reading in other cities. I would like to take a honeymoon. I would like to take over the world. :-)

7.) Make up and answer your own question

Would the world be a better place if people just agreed with me?
Yes, yes it would.

I've had the pleasure of seeing Michelle perform many times and she just gets better every time! I saw the full "Most Naked Woman" routine in New Orleans at the Fest and MAN! Reclaiming the Burly-Q: Appropriating it as a Feminist Performance Art

In the activist world of reclamation, who decides what should be fought for and what gets left on the wayside? One thing that third wave feminists can agree on is that we don’t always agree. Whoa, that’s right you’ve seen that dirty word feminism twice now! Let’s define it shall we dears, just to clear up any misconceptions. When you read that go ahead and substitute it for the struggle for social, political and economic equality between men and women. There we go, moving on! Now, being a sex-positive feminist (go look it up baby doll it’s some good sexy reading) I feel very passionate about reclaiming specific creative outlets such as the performance art of Burlesque. I myself have participated in burlesque shows and am fully active in the burgeoning Pin Up culture in DFW, and cannot adequately describe the empowerment I feel when I get on stage or sell some pasties to another broad at a show!

This isn’t just striptease…far from it. This is about expression and entertainment, about gorgeous rockabilly/pyschobilly/goth/rock/glam/ what-have-you ladies of all shapes, sizes, and ethnicities getting on stage and knockin’ everyone dead by how in control they are. It’s mesmerizing when done right, and boy do those women know how to do it right! This is a harkening back to a classier standard of performance, one in which pride can be taken. This is about women deciding when, where, and how they will shake it! When these ladies demonstrate the love of their bodies and the satisfaction they feel from a cheering audience, it is always sexy. I’ve had the sincere pleasure of working and interacting with quite a few of the up and comings in the North Texas and DFW burly-q circuit…and frankly I’m hooked! It never fails that in every troupe there are beautiful, unconventional, empowered, and bold women who are just plain obsessed with Pin up culture and they have their bright eyes set on takin’ back the golden era of burlesque!

See, women got shafted in the 1940s and 1950s…and well, this unfortunately carries on presently. But no more, we want this time back, and in full glory! Burlesque that is for women by women, and pro-woman is thankfully not at all hard to find anymore. There is a new breed of burlesque taking over; one where tattoos and body modifications are welcomed, and where the "any figured" woman can feel at home on stage! With each performance these classy dames are re-writing the standard of beauty, which has been bias and unnatural for far too long. So the next time you feel like participating in a little activism, go to a burly-q and support your local Pin ups and Burly-q Queens and prepare to be seduced and shimmied into satisfaction!

Lady Divina

Unless you have been living under a rock, chances are you know about the fabulous woman who I will be interviewing this week. She personifies elegance, grace, and timeless beauty (you'd swear she was born in the wrong time period.) She is Lady Divina, the raven haired entertainer who has been a beacon in the DFW burlesque scene. She, along with Diamond Jim, have brought many famous burlesque entertainers to DFW, including Michelle L'Amour, Kitten DeVille, and soon Kalani Kokonuts and Rene L'Roux! Her penchant for classic burlesque keeps her legion of fans begging for more, and her attention to detail (right down to the rhinestoned stilettos) make women everywhere drool (including me, she got me hooked on Swarovski's!) Read on to discover more about your beloved Divina!

1.) How did you get into burlesque?

I have always been in love with the 30’s and 40’s era. I’ve seen Dita von Teese three times in Dallas and I fell in love with the art of the tease. I’ve always talked about dabbling in burlesque and pin-up modeling. I finally got into pin-up modeling a few years ago and Jill Rasco, one of my favorite photographers asked me to do a burlesque number in her website launch party at the Church. Well, the rest is history!

2.) Who are your main influences?

I would have to say, even though I have the upmost respect for Dita von Teese, it is her contemporary, Catherine D’Lish who has inspired me the most. She is the reason I wanted to give burlesque a try. I am also influenced by the sirens and femme fatales of the silver screen, Mae West (we are born on the same day), Ava Gardener, Heddy Lamarr, and Elizabeth Taylor.

3.) You are known for your beautiful routines decked out in Swarovski crystals... how long does it take you to finish a costume generally?

Some of my costumes can take a few weeks, but most of them take a few months. Hand-placing Swarovskis on costumes can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. Most of my corsets are custom made from a corset maker from California. I currently have a costume that is being custom made by my costume consultant friend, which may take over a month for the gown alone, not including the thousands of Swarovskis rhinestones that will be hand placed on the lace.

4.) What has been a challenge for you this year, and what has been your biggest accomplishment?

My biggest challenge is this year is keeping up with the high standards, as the Dallas burlesque community keeps raising the bar with each and every performance. There are some fabulous and creative talent that is wowing the audiences with over the top numbers and routines. I’m trying my very best to keep up with dazzling costumes and bigger routine ideas.
My biggest accomplishment is that our show is constantly booking national talent & the brightest local performers. WE have one of the best stages in town to call home to our productions (see Lakewood Theater).

5.) Having accomplished so much this year, and so many more things in the works, how do you blow off steam and keep sane?

I do a lot of bicycling, it’s great exercise and very therapeutic. Pasty making is also therapeutic for me; there is a method and process to it, which I enjoy.

6.) What is in store for La Divina and La Divina Productions in the future?

I got some great shows coming up in the very near future. We just finished our Dallas debut of Naked Girls Reading, created by our favourite Chicago performer, Michelle L’amour. The show was a huge hit and we are currently working on the next show for mid November. This month we have the Nouvelle Burlesque at the Lakewood Theater, which the winner of the burlesque competition will get a spot in our Burlesque Nocturne Revue in October. The Burlesque Nocturne will arguable be our most extravagant show, featuring the current Reigning Queen of Burlesque, Kalani Kokonuts. Visit www.ladivinaburlesque.com for more details.

Words being strung together to make sentences, then paragraphs - meshing together rapidly to form paragraphs, until it all comes together in a heaping pile of pages and forms a book or magazine. I'll hunt down some of the sexiest, smartest, and most amazing literature I can find... and let you in on the little treasures I happen upon. ;)

Let me catch my breath...

So much has gone on since I myself have updated! So, back on the 8th of August, I headed over to the Plaza Arts Center to be a voyeur and costume participant for Glam'Amour's Bewitching Burlesque Midsummer Masquerade. (Say that 5 times fast!) The show was AMAZING! The debuts were astounding (gotta say, Jade Pearl and Miss Bubbles von BonBon were among my faves!) and the still fresh Aviva Voila put on quite a show, despite a costume malfunction, and recieved the only standing ovation that night. That to me means that you are meant to be a TRUE performer! The veterans put on thier game faces and wowed the crowd as usual, with Ginger Valentine, Black Mariah and Ruby Joule headlining the show!

Now, onto the costume portion - my main squeeze Erin Go Braughless from ATX freaking KILLED in a handmade mucha libre costume, and hammed it up to take the Crowd Favorite! A most handsomely dressed man decked out in Edwardian fare took Most Debonair, and Alice from Dallas took Most Glamorous. Now, I'll be honest, I really was rooting for two different gals standing next to me for most Bewitching - one was completely decked out in 1920's garb, and the other in a fetching top hat, corset and gown that looked KILLER - but when they called my name, I just grinned like an idiot and tried not to cry tears of joy. I spent a good 8 or 9 days of 4-8 hours a day on my costume, all the way down to the pantyhose were all mapped out. I looked out on the crowd cheering so hard for me, and I wanted nothing more than to hug everyone! It was truly an amazing evening, and I look forward to sitting on the panel of judges next year.

MIss Coco Lectric!

You all know I love my Austin gals - there are so many talented ladies in ATX! Among them are the lovely Jigglewatts, and I have had the priviledge of performing with the dynamite duo of Ruby Joule and Coco Lectric on various stages... and since I have already had Ruby on my blog, it's Coco's turn to give you her take on traveling, troupe life, and why she loves to dance!

Miss Coco Lectric has been gracing stages all over Texas and the southwest with the Jigglewatts Burlesque for three years. She utilizes her classic dance training, love for the exotic, and her cutting wit to astound audiences across the globe. She has performed in Austin at La Zona Rosa, Antone's, Stubb's, and Continental Club, and the historic Texas Theatre in Dallas, among many others. Honors include: Texas Bikini Team Best Dance Performance Award, and the Audience Choice Award at the Texas Burlesque Festival 2009, and just finished a national tour performing burlesque and go-go with psychobilly band Johnny Hootrock.

1.) What got you into burlesque?

I had been interested in striptease for the ten years I had been a professional choreographer and dancer and had incorporated it into some of my jazz and go-go choreography. However, it wasn’t until a moment on the set of an independent zombie movie musical that Miss Ruby Joule and Miss Cherry Zapp and I decided to form a group with the sole purpose of creating burlesque. I got into burlesque, personally, because I love putting sensuality and fun back into being sexy.

2.) You have some of the most amazingly unique routines! How do you come up with the inspiration for them?

They just happen. My brain is tuned into burlesque most of the time. It’s what I think of when I wake up in the morning and, consequently, I am inspired by the things I see and hear throughout the day. Sometimes I’ll hear a song and all of the sudden I have the whole number played out for me in my head, and I think, “Yeah, this has to happen.” At other times I decide that I want to be a character like the Queen of Hearts, or a carousel pony, or even a tangerine, and I make that happen. There are even times that friends and lovers inspire an act; routines are very personal to me and I give each number my all.

3.) You have been part of the Jigglewatts for some time now, how would you describe your troupe?

Our troupe is fabulous! We had quite a theatrical beginning. Our first shows were theme oriented and we incorporated a lot of ensembles. As time went on we began to notice that solos were much easier to put together because getting four to five girls together on a regular basis can be difficult. When we decided to focus on solos our group really started to flourish; our individual styles became more apparent and beautiful. We are a very supportive troupe and we have similar goals—to create amazing routines and support women who are working toward the same goal. Currently, our troupe consists of Miss Ruby Joule, Cherry Zapp, Goldie Candela, Pearl Lux, Champagne Shock, and me.

4.) What has been a challenge for you this year? Your biggest achievement?

Oddly enough, the challenge for me this year has been coordinating all of the shows that we’re performing in and the ones that we’re creating. It’s more of a matter of time and money that makes burlesque so complicated; it takes a great deal of both to be successful.
Miss Ruby and I have gone to great lengths this year to hone our craft; this has required a great deal of travel. We learned so much from our trip to Las Vegas for the Burlesque Hall of Fame/Miss Exotic World weekend. The business aspect of burlesque can be just as important at the artistic side—no one will ever see what we’ve created if we don’t find a way to get it out there.
My biggest achievement this year has been the opportunity to show large audiences what we can do and make friends with other burlesque groups from around the world. This year I won the Audience Choice Award at the Texas Burlesque Festival, which was a great and surprising moment for me; we made some great new friends at the event, too. The next day Miss Ruby and I performed at Hot Rods & Heels in Dallas where we made a grand impression on the audience there, and of course, more new friends. Miss Ruby and I were able to show the nation a thing or two while on tour with psychobilly band, Johnny Hootrock. It was an honor to be able to bring classic burlesque to stages all over the southwest. We were particularly elated to perform at the Viper Room in Los Angeles.

5.) What's a personal goal you'd like to see accomplished in the coming months?

My personal goal for the coming months is to perform for a larger and broader audience. I look forward to knocking some socks off in New Orleans at the New Orleans Burlesque Festival Burlesque Bash with Catherine D’Lish on September 12th, in Dallas in Burlesque Nocturne featuring Kalani Kokonuts on October 23rd, and I am honored to be headlining with Miss Ruby Joule in the Gifts & Garters holiday event in Dallas on December 5th.

6.) Burlesque can be a time consuming and expensive venture, why is it so important for you to continue to perform?

For me, the art of burlesque is not only enjoyable, but also rewarding. The art of burlesque incorporates many aspects of the artist’s sensuality, social climate, and their own traits and desires. Being burlesque performer is empowering and inspiring. As a performer with a diverse cultural background and a fuller figure, I find that I am able to encourage many other women to test the limits of their sensuality by example. When I’m on stage I am having the time of my life; I feel honored to be able to be so available to the audience. I’m there to feel special and make others feel special, too. It’s the greatest compliment when women approach me after the show to tell me how much they want to do what I’m doing and that they’d love to learn.

For all of you that have gotten to know me, you know that I am a total burlesque nerd - I love to read about the history of burlesque, I read constantly about shows and stars all over the globe, shoot, I even follow a bunch of burlyq folks and businesses on my Twitter. I get so excited and nervous when I meet one of my idols - when I met Michelle L'Amour back in March I almost cried, and I'm surprised that I could talk to her without stammering! Well, here is another one of those moments - I have the distinct pleasure and honor of interviewing none other than the Nude Magician herself, Dusty Summers! I can't express how lucky I feel to have such an honor! Read on to hear about the way burlesque was, her career, and some GREAT tips for anyone who wants to learn the biz.

1.) Tell us a little about your burlesque career as the Nude Magician!

I started as a bikini go go girl in about 1966 in Phoenix, AZ. Less than a year later, I was doing my first strip in a theatre in downtown Phoenix that was trying to revive burlesque! Chris Starr, a burlesque queen from the 50’s, was the choreographer and gave me the name Dusty. In the next few years I worked mostly as a topless go go dancer who also did a strip tease which made me unique at the time.

Eventually, I got an agent and became a full time exotic. When I was booked into Surfside Seven in Ft. Walton Beach, Florida, I met and later married the comic/magician Professor Turban. He taught me magic.

In about 1975 I was booked in the Royal Las Vegas in Las Vegas in a show called “Olde Tyme Burlesque.” In the years following I worked in several showrooms in Las Vegas when I wasn’t touring the rest of the country and Canada.

In 1983 I opened my own burlesque club Dusty’s West in San Angelo, Texas. In 1992 I left the entertainment world and went to work at Circus Circus in Las Vegas, first as a dealer, then as a pit boss.

I also wrote and published two books; The Lady is a Stripper/ Memoirs of Las Vegas’ Only Nude Magician, and The Golden G-String and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration.

2.) How has burlesque changed, from your point of view?

Shows are MUCH shorter and the girls are performing much less frequently. Very few are earning a living in burlesque.

3.) The burlesque scene has soared in popularity in recent years, with movies, books and celebrities like Dita von Teese representing our culture. Do you feel that the standards have had to change for performers, to meet the popularity?

I think audiences nowadays expect immediate gratification. They don’t have the patience for the slow tease of the old days. Most young people don’t know the difference between burlesque and lap dancing but I think that as they are exposed to the glamour, tease, fun and entertainment of today’s enthusiastic, talented burlesque performers they will want more.

4.) Describe one of the best moments in your burlesque career, and one of your most challenging.

There have been many great moments during my burlesque career including starring in my own show on the Strip in Las Vegas, touring this country, performing in Canada (where the audiences are fantastic) and performing at my first Exotic World event in 2006. It is fun reconnecting with the women I worked with long ago. I love meeting the new stars of today’s burlesque scene and seeing them perform.
It is challenging to try to put on a show today that justifies the admiration of the neo burlesque crowd. I could never have imagined years ago that I would be performing again in burlesque at my age!

5.) What is your involvement currently in burlesque?

So far it has been limited to appearances at Exotic World in Las Vegas and the Boston Burlesque Expo in Boston but I am planning on performing in Los Angeles with Lili VonSchtupp sometime this fall and most likely in various Texas venues. I would like to perform in more of the burlesque festivals around the country if I can afford it. I really enjoy sharing my experiences with today’s performers and helping them when I can.

6.) What advice would you give to today’s burlesque performers?

Enjoy yourself onstage. When or if it isn’t fun anymore, QUIT! Keep it classy and keep smiling.

OK, my fellow burlesque lovers - I'm going to start branching outside of the South for my interviews. Now, don't fret - I still have PLENTY of lovelies that I want you to get to know... but I have begun to realize the amazing bevy of talent that lies above the Mason - Dixon line.

Red Hot Annie from Chicago began as – and remains – a pinup model since 2003. With an extensive performance background to draw on, she turned her attentions to burlesque in early 2008. In short order, she has become one of the most recognizable and visible faces in Chicago burlesque, blending comedy, sexiness, and storytelling into a crowd-pleasing style. She has performed with – among others – Beast Women Cabaret, Varietease Cabaret, and Belmont Burlesque Revue. In July 2008, Red Hot Annie paired up with Dick Dijon to create Vaudezilla Productions, which has become a major force in Chicago by redefining the burlesque bar show and setting a new standard for burlesque variety shows. In 2009, she began expanding her presence beyond Chicago , making appearances at the Vancouver International Burlesque Festival, the Texas Burlesque Festival, and with the Brew City Bombshells in Milwaukee. I found this hot rod of a lady through Rose Darling, who will be travelling north soon to be in a Vaudezilla production! I tracked her down, and after oohing and aahing over her pictures and finally getting the courage up to ask her for an interview, I got what I wanted. She is a sweet, sweet gal, with a lot on her plate - read on for her views on burlesque, girls' nights out, and her love for the Big Lebowski.

1.) How did you get into burlesque?

I started performing in the theatre when I was 16. I’ve been in probably 40-50 plays and musicals in Chicago and the suburbs. Some of my girlfriends perform burlesque, and 5more than 5 years ago, I started watching burlesque. I’d just sit in Belmont Burlesque’s audience and enjoy the show. With some later encouragement from friends, I decided to take the plunge. My first solo was in January 2008.

2.) I see that you are doing a tribute show to the The Big Lewbowski - where do you come up with concepts and routines for events like these?

I am lucky to be able to make my living as an artist, annd one of the major advantages of that is that I am always surrounded by creative people who inspire me. My partner, Dick Dijon, and I came up with the idea of Big Lebowski burlesque one night while we were watching the movie. I’m sure it started out as a joke, but we realized the potential very early on – this all happened in the early part of this year. And as all good ideas tend to do, it hung around, kept coming up every now and then, and finally worked its way onto our schedule.

3.) Do you consider yourself a traditional classic stripteaser, or do you dabble more into the vaudevillian side?

I’m pretty flexible about what I’d consider myself. A lot of my current work falls safely into classic strip tease, but I have been known to dip into neo-burlesque and vaudevillian, especially since the theatre shows I produce include talking roles for the burlesque performers. The main goal is to do something that I enjoy and that will entertain a lot of people. So, whatever gets those two jobs done is okay with me.

4.) Describe the burlesque scene in Chicago, what's it like to take if off in the Windy City?

The burlesque scene in Chicago is booming! When my company, Vaudezilla, stormed onto the scene about a little more than a year ago, there were only a couple shows every month. Now, Vaudezilla alone produces 2-3 shows/week! Some of the other Chicago troupes I love are Varietease Cabaret, Belmont Burlesque Revue, High Voltage, and Hot-n-Heavy. One of the reasons I love these particular productions so much is because they contribute a sense of camaraderie to the scene. I also love them because each one contributes something unique to the community overall, and that positions Chicago as a location where there is something to suit a wide range of tastes. Plus, we all provide each other with opportunities to work in each other’s shows, we cross-promote our shows, and there is almost no drama!

5.) Tell us about one of the most amazing experiences you've had in the past year, and one of of your most challenging times.

The most amazing experience I’ve had in the past year was when I traveled to Vancouver to perform in the Vancouver International Burlesque Fest. I got to perform 4 different acts over the course of 2 nights, and we had huge, enthusiastic crowds. Diamond Minx puts on an amazing show, and I got to meet some amazing performers, including Rosie Bitts, Scarlett James, and host Vincent Drambuie. Everyone was very welcoming, and it was an ideal first festival experience.

The most challenging part of doing burlesque has been it’s affect on my personal time. Once upon a time, I used to sit barefoot on my porch and drink red wine with my girlfriends. Now, I can’t remember the last Girls Night I’ve had. Burlesque has taken over my life! I love it, but I do miss having more time to spend with my non-burlesque friends.

6.) What are some goals for Red Hot Annie this year?

I would love to travel more this year and appear in more festivals. They’re terrific performance experiences, and as a producer, it’s always informative to get out of your own backyard every now and then to see how other areas put shows together. I’ve also got my eye on opening a theatre/performance space. I’m not sure if a girl can realistically do both, but I love a good challenge, so I’d love to try!

6.) Since you’re also a producer, what are some goals for you company, Vaudezilla?

One of the main goals we’re focusing on right now is raising the bar for the Chicago burlesque scene in general. I think that most people within the community would say that Vaudezilla has already had a serious impact over the last year in terms of performance opportunities alone. But we also have an eye towards making Chicago a hot spot for performers who are interested in traveling. We’ve already had an out-of-state performers Kai de Vicious (Milwaukee) and Miss Kitchy Coo (San Francisco). And we’ve got more guests lined up for August, including Rose Darling (Dallas)! Penny Starr Jr. (Hollywood) is coming to perform and to conduct an afternoon’s worth of burlesque workshops on Saturday, August 29. In September, we’ll be hosting Minne Tonka (New York) and Super Happy Funtime (Grand Rapids). We really hope to make Chicago a prime burlesque destination, and we are always excited to bring in traveling performers!

OK - so I know you alllll went to Atomic Frolic, yes? Well, I hope you did, because it was one of the most AMAZING experiences ever! The cast was amazing, the crew rocked, and La Divina and Diamond Jim pulled out all the stops! Well, this night was special for me as well, because I got to be a mannequin for some amazing local companies that night... the fabu Kim of Poisoned Creations came to my rescue when I desperately needed to complete my 50's housewife attire, and made me a special apron to wear! I think I looked pretty spot on... :)

1.) How did you get into creating your own unique products?

I started out making baby items like bibs and blankets for my brother’s twins and then dresses and skirts for my daughter and me. I really liked that I could pick and design what I wanted rather then store buying. From there it grew to family and friends wanting those items too.

2.) How do you feel when you see someone wearing or carrying something from your line?

It’s awesome! I love that my designs are getting out there and liked. It’s also awesome to be told how much torture an item has been through and yet it’s still as perfect like the day they bought it.

3.) What's been one of your biggest challenges you've faced with your business, and what's been your biggest accomplishment?

One of my biggest challenges is getting my name out there beyond Texas. Just like any designer I want to be out there in the bright lights. My biggest accomplishment would probably have to be at Hot Rods and Heels during the fashion show portion. I have never done a fashion show and it was fabulous. I was given awesome models to work with and that is always great!

4.) What's new in store for Poisoned Creations?

I’m extending my line to include men’s clothing and women’s fascinator hats. I’m sure men want something rockin’ you can’t find in stores too. The fascinator hats have opened up a whole other outlet of creating for me that I love!

5.) Speaking of creative, how did you come up with that name?

I wish I had a good story but sadly I don’t. I just wrote down all kinds of words I could use in a name on a pad of paper and came up with Poisoned Creations. It fits, I love using skulls in my designs. Maybe now I should think of a fabulous story that could only be made up ha!

6.) Who would you like to see in your creations?

I would love to see Dita Von Teese in my designs. She is so gorgeous and I love her style. I would also love to see Gwen Stefani in my designs. She has such a unique style and her personality really shows in what she wears. As for men’s clothing I would love to see Jesse James or maybe Mike Ness in my shirts. Both scream bad ass to me. Also since I have been reminiscing of my childhood lately I would say Donnie Wahlberg. He was gangsta to me back then ;)

Atomic Frolic - WOW.

I can say, without a DOUBT - that this has been one of the funnest experiences I have had yet. La Divina and Diamond Jim put on one HECKUVA show, along with Java from Bachelor Pad, who was our SUAVE emcee (I got to bring him his little black book of naughty girls' numbers, hehe). I shared the stage with my lovely friend Bunny Bailey, and we tore it up as the panty wranglers! The performers pulled out all the stops - Ginger Valentine debuted 2 SWELTERING new numbers (I gotta say, her pasties for the stewardess numbers were GORGEOUS... I gotta find out who made those ;D), Lady Divina performed one of my ALL TIME FAVE numbers (I love her fan routines). Black Mariah literally SCORCHED the stage with her Hell routine (she burned off her corset, HOT!). Ruby Rocket showed everyone in the place her "Cuban beat", while newcomer Cora Coquette showed that she clearly earns the title given to her of "fiercest fanny." Angela Ryan and Rose darling also both performed brand new numbers (Angela looked straight out of a vintage men's magazine, while Rose took the stage in a sweet yet naughty little number). Kitten DeVille was the headliner of the evening, proving how she won the title of Miss Exotic World 2002 with her momentous energy and hypnotic gyrations, all the while in a pair of 5 inch platforms. DAMN is all I can say about the evening!

My beautiful readers, I am warning you in advance right now, turn up your AC and bring in that box fan from your living room... my interview for this week is so SMOKING HOT it's a little insane. I got the pleasure of catching up with none other than Miss Ruby Joule from the Jigglewatts down in ATX! If you have not caught one of her shows, you need to write that down on your todo list next to grocery store! Ruby and her compatriot Coco Lectric are in Dallas quite often, in fact, Ruby will be performing at Glam'Amour's Bewitching Midsummer Masquerade, so hurry up and grab your seats now, this event will sell out FAST! And until then, you can hear Ruby's thoughts on touring, diamonds, and what her idea of achievement is.

1.) What got you into burlesque?

I grew up in the theatre and dance world, so everything on the stage is of keen interest to me. When I became aware that girls in my generation were reviving this art, I was instantly smitten with the idea. Problem was, I didn’t know where to start. One day while waiting around on a film set, my co-stars and I got to talking about the subject of burlesque. Turns out, we all wanted to do it and nothing was stopping us, so voila! A troupe was born.

2.) Being in Austin, where EVERYTHING is so colorful and unique, how
do you come up with ideas for routines?

Everything is fair game for inspiration! A snippet of a song, a vintage gown, a play I see… I am routinely inspired by historical figures, fairy tales, mythology, flora and fauna. Sometimes the idea for a costume comes first, sometimes it will be a song that I just HAVE to dance to, sometimes it’s a concept that I want to explore or a prop I want to use, but in the end all the elements fit together like a jigsaw puzzle.

3.) As part of the Jigglewatts, what have you found to be beneficial
to keeping a troupe together and thriving?

The troupe has changed a bit since its inception, and rather than insist upon a repertoire of group numbers, which might seem likely for a “troupe”, we’ve encouraged mainly solo and duet work for the performers. This has helped each dancer develop her own character and style, which keeps everyone motivated. It is logistically more practical, and as a very small troupe it just suits us better.

4.) What will be happening for Miss Ruby Joule in the coming months?

As a champion of the arts and of local artists, I am first lending myself out as a canvas for a body painting event at a gallery opening. Then at the end of July I am flying to Hollywood with Miss Coco Lectric to perform at The Viper Room with the band, Johnny Hootrock, and continuing with the tour through Arizona to Las Vegas. In August I am delighted to be performing in Dallas once again at the Bewitching Masquerade Ball, then at the Bettie Page tribute show in Austin. September brings the much anticipated New Orleans Burlesque Festival, and perhaps I’ll be back in Dallas by the end of the year! Time sure flies when you’re shakin’ it!

5.) What has been a challenge for you this year? What about accomplishments?

The main challenge this year has been keeping up with all the events and happenings; managing the troupe as well as my own solo activities. Sometimes it seems they go by too fast to properly enjoy them all! As far as accomplishments, I am thrilled to have met such creative, genuine and supportive performers from all over the country. Not only the wonderful Dallas girls, but our new friends in Chicago, Seattle, New York, New Orleans and all over are endlessly passionate, talented and encouraging, and I’m honored to know them. I’m also proud to have finally produced my “Diamond’s Are a Girl’s Best Friend” routine, which was percolating in my head for over a year.

6.) What do you consider to be the highest achievement a performer can attain?

This question is dear to my heart because I have struggled with it recently. It’s wonderful to be recognized and appreciated for the hard work one does as an artist. Too often in our society artists are undervalued or ignored altogether.
But for me personally, no title, award, or official selection can ever compare to the reward of having thrilled an audience completely and transported them to another world for a few moments. It’s that breathless connection as the story and spectacle unfold; that feeling is what keeps me coming back to the stage and makes it all worthwhile. I am eternally grateful to the audiences of fans and peers who make this possible.

Welcome to the Daily Shot - Pixie O'Kneel, coproducer for Bewitching Burlesque!!

I absolutely love what I do - I dance, I create my costumes, and I get to meet some of the most beautiful, intelligent, and strong women. My interview for today is one of my absolute favorite people - she is a role model of mine, and she is one of the strongest women I have the privilege of knowing . Ms. Pixie O'Kneel is here to tell you all about her foray into burlesque, being a mama in many different forms, and her fried chicken!

1.) What got you into the burlesque world?

When Glam'Amour produced the first Bewitching Burlesque event, I wanted to be the panty wrangler so bad because I figured it was the easiest way to at least get my foot in the door and here I am!...I have always loved anything that has to do with dressing up, getting on stage, or dance. When I was little, my cousin and I peeped at my Uncle's Penthouse and Playboy magazines, and I thought those girls were so pretty and it was okay with me that they were naked and wanted to be in one of those magazines. Then when I was in college, I wanted to try my hand at stripping but, was too chicken shit....I figure being involved with Bewitching is the best way for me to fulfill those dreams I had given up on.

2.) Give us a little insight into what you do for Bewitching.

Well....I am in charge of the back of the house and Glam'Amour is in charge of the front of the house...Kinda sounds like we're running a brothel, doesn't it?...Anyway, I help with the selections during the audition process, write posts for the Bewitching Burlesque blog, help with advertising, and other pre-production things like that. When we have an event, I am the Stage Manager...As the Stage Manager, I make sure they show runs smoothly and on time and that all of the props,performers and panty wranglers are where they need to be when they need to be there with what they need.

3.) I have had the privilege of both performing with you and having you be my
stage mama - What are the biggest joys of both of those positions for you?

As Stage Mama, the biggest joy is when the performers and panty wranglers tell me they have had such a good time at an event I am in charge of and that it was a positive experience for them. That is so important to what Glam'Amour and I are striving to provide with Bewitching. We want everyone, no matter their experience, age, or size to get to live their dream of being a star, even if it is just for one night and having a positive experience while doing it.

As a performer, my biggest joy is when I take that stage and there is a woman in that audience who sees me and I look like her...A big girl, who doesn't have a perfect body anymore, up on that stage, saying what I've got to say, and having a fuckin' awesome time, and people are cheering...Then she goes home and thinks on it for a while and decides "if Pixie O'Kneel can get up there and do that, then I can do it too."...And she is inspired to follow whatever dream her heart desires, whether it is burlesque, or whatever she thought she couldn't do because of her weight, her age, or whatever else she is letting her keep her from pursuing her dreams...She knows it is okay for her to follow those dreams.

4.) What has been one of the biggest challenges you have faced as a Bewitching
producer? Biggest rewards?

The biggest challenge for me is that I don't know how to deal with people very well. I have a hard time letting people down easy and being PC. I think everyone should just be able to suck it up and keep on rollin'. Lucky for me, Glam'Amour had that skill and is like Thumper's Mom reminding Thumper what his Daddy told him...."If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all."

The biggest reward for me is that I get to be a part of the craziness that is Bewitching Burlesque. I was completely freaked when Glam asked me to be her partner, I was like, wtf!, there are so many people who have more knowledge and connections than I do that would be SO much better at this than me. But she sees in me what I don't see in myself, foul mouth and all!

5.) What is a major goal that you wish to achieve in the coming months with
Bewitching? What are some upcoming things that my readers should look forward
to?

Right now, my biggest goal is to make Bewitching Burlesque something with staying power...There are so many people who venture out and try new things, and for whatever reason, they fail. I want Bewitching Burlesque to be something Glam and I do until we're were old old ladies!

Well, we have our Mid-Summer Masquerade on August 8th at the Carrollton Plaza Arts...This is going to be a fab event...We have some awesome, awesome performers and vendors scheduled...There is going to be a costume pageant with some wonderful prizes...It's BYOB...And there is even going to be a photographer set up to take your picture, like at the Prom, you know, but WAY better!

We have Gifts and Garters coming up on December 5th at Excuses Cafe...We've partnered up with Through the Looking Glass Studio for a shopping/burlesque show EXTRAVAGANZA...It's going to so cool...I guess the easiest way I can explain it would be a "counter culture" arts and crafts show and burlesque show on crack!!

And we are already planning some rockin' stuff for 2010...It will be here before you know it!

6.) What are 3 things people would be surprised to know about you:

1) I am actually painfully shy...New people and places scare the bloody hell out of me.

2) I am the proud Mama of 2 teenage boyos...The oldest is 18 and graduated from high school last month...The youngest is 17 and will be a Senior in high school in the fall.

3) My fried chicken is so good you'll pee your pants! :)

Rose Darling, the darling of DFW burlesque

If you went to the Dallas Burlesque Festival earlier this year, then not only did you see some amazing burlesque talents, but you also saw the spunky Rose Darling, who panty wrangled that evening. Rose, who debuted as a soloist this year at Glam'Amour's Bewitching Burlesque Revue, has had an amazing past few months! She is known as the "Darling of Burlesque", and for good reason - this gal is the sweetest, easiest to get to know person you'll meet! She also has quite the brain behind that beauty - she has designed some of DFW's biggest productions' logos and marketing, including the logo for my non-profit organization, Burlesque for the Cause! How's that for being busy? Rose was kind enough to answer some burning questions for me, in between preparing for her stint for a mini Dr. Sketchy's at the Soda Gallery on July 2nd, as none other than Ms. Marvel (drooooollll) and the Atomic Frolic at the Lakewood on July 18th!

1.) What got you into burlesque and modeling?

I had been needing an outlet of some kind. I'm the one in my group of friends that always goes overboard at the costume/theme parties; planning my exact outfit, makeup, doing my hair a certain way and acting the part. I had also been taking dance classes (I've always loved dancing) but it wasn't the same as performing. I've always had this side to me that is a big ham and when I heard about burlesque, I knew I had to go for it.
The modeling started in college just for fun. Most of my friends are photographers and I just happened to be free when they needed me. I also think my large closet of clothes had something to do with it! When I started burlesque, modeling just seemed to go hand in hand. Plus I think it's pretty fun.

2.) This year has been pretty amazing for you! Tell us about some of the things that have happened!

Well first off, I felt like I hit a restart button. This year I debuted going solo, after being in a troupe for over year. I now feel like I'm really in the burlesque community, whom have welcomed me in with open arms and so many opportunities. I have to thank my hunny bunny, Ginger Valentine, who's been with me since the beginning of our burlesque careers, continually encourages me and introduced me to all you fine lovely ladies. GlamAmour gave me an opening to debut in her Bewitching Burlesque show, I landed as a Top 3 Finalist for "One-to-Watch" for Hot Rods and Heels, and I will be performing at Atomic Frolic! I also was asked to design the flyers for Spring Fling, Hot Rods & Heels, Atomic Frolic. And the websites: DallasBurlesque.com, LaDivinaBurlesque.com, my own website RoseDarlingBurlesque.com and of course the logo for your new venture, Burlesque for the Cause. I've been a busy girl.

3.) A lot of people in the burlesque community refer to you as the "Darling of Burlesque". How do you feel about that, and can you tell us a little about how you've earned that moniker?

Oh I love it, it just fits. Not only cause of my name, but I try to always be one as well. I take the the phrase, "You get what you give, so give good" very seriously, it's very simple and everyone should consider abiding by that too.

4.) I heard that you are going to Chicago to perform in 2 shows!! Congrats! Can you tell us a little about that?

Thank you! Red Hot Annie ( http://redhotannie.com/burlesque.htm ) is a burlesque dancer and pin-up model in Chicago. She and her husband produce shows under the name, Vaudezilla Productions ( http://vaudezilla.com/ ). She happened to find me and asked me if I would ever consider coming to Chicago to perform. I, of course, was thrilled. I spent part of my childhood in Chicago and have been looking for an excuse to go back as an adult.
Vaudezilla Productions put on a weekly show every Thursday and then do a once a month
show on Fridays. We worked it so I would perform both Thursday & Friday. Annie is very focused and so very nice. She even offered to let my husband and I stay at her house! Some of you who went to the Texas Burlesque Festival may have met her or seen her perform. 5.) What does the rest of 2009 have in store for you?

Well I've applied to the New Orleans Burlesque Festival (http://www.neworleansburlesquefest.com/ ), so hopefully I will get in one of the categories and be able to perform there in September. This will be my first festival if I get in and I've never been to New Orleans before so this would be a great reason to go! I also hope a bunch of us get in so we can all hang out together and show them what us Texas girlies can do! hah!

6.) Where do you find inspiration?

So far I've been taking things I've always loved and embraced as a part of me and made burlesque concepts out of them. I feel like I'm taking all the characters that make up my personality and making them come alive. I'm constantly combing the web for inspiration, I've been posting them on my blog/website as "obsessions." It's usually fashion photography or random artifacts from the past. I'm really drawn to the French culture the most, which my "Laisse tomber les filles" routine is influenced from.
I'm also really getting into the details of the whole process. For my Barbarella routine, I researched and learned all of the background behind it. My costume idea evolved from her many costume changes in the movie. I just started with a primitive feel and as I took it off it takes a more modern space feel. I was also unsatisfied with the music available for Barbarella so, I remixed my own with sound clips from the movie. Ophelia has studied ballet, latin, smooth ballroom and flamenco dance. She has worked as a topless dancer in Minneapolis, Chicago, New Orleans and Las Vegas throughout the 1990's. With highly skilled sexy-smart antics and a charming love-hate dynamic, Trixie and Monkey showcase trapeze, striptease, acrobatics and physical comedy in jaw-dropping burlesque, cabaret, variety and theater shows. Shamelessly eccentric and wildly photogenic, Trixie and Monkey were featured in the premiere episode of “The Gong Show with Dave Attel” on Comedy Central. PERLE NOIRE, THE BLACK PEARL (New Orleans, LA) Perle Noire is a dynamic and energetic dancer, inspired by the great Josephine Baker. Perle Noire joined the New Orleans-based show Bustout Burlesque in 2005. In 2008, she went on to win Best Debut at the Miss Exotic World pageant in Las Vegas. She travels the world performing in burlesque shows, most recently in London for the annual The Tease Show. This year, Perle Noire won second runner-up for the title of Miss Exotic World, appropriately at The Orleans hotel and casino in Las Vegas.

AMBER RAY (New York) Amber Ray's pageantry is easily described as iconic. This variety vixen is a sensation in the evolving essence of pop art and culture. She is well known for her many characterized acts and adventures based on collaborations for style makers such as Anti-gravity, Susanne Bartsch, Thierry Mugler, Jackie 60, Penny Arcade and a thrivingly New York City performance community. She is inspired by classic burlesque, the freak chic, theater, high-fashion, old Hollywood and the feminine mystique visible in every era. She regularly appears in various publications, and has cameos on cable & network TV.

VIVIENNE VAVOOM (Denver, CO) A versatile vixen of the classic ecdysiasts art, Vivienne can generally be found bumping and grinding a mile high in her hometown of Denver. She has performed at various venues around the country and at Miss Exotic World, Tease-O-Rama and the New York Burlesque Fest. She was named "Most Classic" at the Boston Burlesque Expo 2008. Last year she celebrated 10 years of shimmying with the troupe she founded, Burlesque As It Was and in 2009 she helped to open the Black Box Burlesque Cabaret and launched her new troupe, V Burlesque. Her alter ego, Michelle Baldwin, wrote THE book on the neo-burlesque scene, Burlesque and the The New Bump & Grind. Hello kittens, Vermuth again! WOW, what a week as usual... all sorts going on! The New Orleans Burlesque Festival list comes out this week... cross your fingers! I also got the WONDERFUL chance to meet the lovely Michelle Manx during my last foray into Austin, AND I got to see her perform! If you have never heard of or seen pinup bellydance, you HAVE to see her! Such an elegant way to mesh two classic ideas into a unique style that is mesmerizing to watch! I had but a few brief moments to ask a few questions before she had to float away from the event -

1.) When did you get into bellydance, and who or what brought you to it?

My mother attended a bellydance class at the local community school back in the 70's. I remember how she would practice dancing at home as she would play her Middle Eastern music and I knew that I wanted to learn someday. It wasn't until early 2002 when I decided to check out a class at a woman's fitness center. The timing seemed perfect to pursue a new hobby since I had already established myself in a committed relationship and a stable professional job. Since then, it has become an obsession.

2.) What would you say is the most enjoyable part of your dancing?(ie picking music, preparing, costumes, teaching etc.)

I don't think that there is much of the whole process that I don't love. However, I have really enjoyed creating my own stylization of the dance. My day job as an environmental scientist doesn't really allow for much creativity, so my deep involvement in bellydance has really kept my life interesting for the past seven-and-a-half years.

3.) Tell me about a mentor/teacher/role model you have, and why.

There are so many people that have helped shaped me into who I am today as an artist, dancer, and performer, so it would take up so much of your space to hear about each one, but I wanted to name a few individuals to express my deep gratitude. There are some that I know well and some that I will never have the honor of meeting, but they have been influential or supportive to me in my bellydance career:
My supportive husband Lance Farley, Kajira Djoumahna and Chuck Lehnhard, Stacey Lizette, Lucila Velez, Z-Helene Christopher, Tashar, Jamila Salimpour, Suhaila Salimpour, Bettie Page, Rita Hayworth, Marilyn Monroe, Jill Parker, Rachel Brice, and every student which has attended my classes/workshops. There are many others and I could go on for days naming names.

4.) Any advice you'd give to any pinup starlets or beginning bellydancers you feel was beneficial to you?

Well, first of all, bellydance is extremely difficult. At first, you are accessing and isolating muscle groups in ways that are unfamiliar to most people, so please be kind to yourself and know that it takes time and dedication to learn this amazing form of dance. One of the most important things to me is to express gratitude to those that have helped you with the dance, whether it might be to your teachers, audience, or workshop producers.

5.) How did you start incorporating the art of pin-up into the art of bellydance?

The concept of Pin-up Bellydance was born at the tattoo convention which has been a yearly gig for me whenever I don't have bellydance event to attend. I started adding elements from my regular wardrobe (influenced by vintage fashions of the 1940's and 50's) into my costuming, since I felt it would work well the tattoo crowd. At the same time, I had been taking a Bharata Natyam (Classical Indian Dance) class to learn more about the poses and facial expressions, which are prevalent in Tribal Bellydance. I started to experiment by replacing the Indian poses in Tribal Fusion Bellydance with the facial expressions and poses of the classic pin-up girl, as well as incorporating old jazz and rockabilly music into my performances. At this point, I wasn't trying to create my own stylization of bellydance. I didn't have a name for my stylization until I received and joyfully accepted an invitation to teach at Tribal Fest 8 (2008) in Sebastopol, California. I decided to teach Pin-up Bellydance and to my surprise, the class sold out within a month. Since then, I have had the honor of being invited back twice to this amazing festival, as well as other festivals and events in this genre of bellydance. I've really enjoyed performing for burlesque audiences, as well. The two forms of entertainment work so well together, in my humble opinion.

Miss Missy Photography

Hello again, my lovelies! I just got done shooting with Miss Missy Photography, and let me tell you! What am absolute joy she was to shoot with! I arrived makeup done, and as soon as I stepped out of my car, I knew I had left my costumes at home! She was so understanding and gracious and waited patiently as I made the trek back. When I arrived again, her MUAH Blondie did my hair FABULOUSLY. Usually I get my hair done by the wonderful Lynne D. Bomb of Vintage Flair, but I decided to try her out, and was pleasantly happy!

Miss Missy herself is wonderfully talented, and made me feel at ease and comfortable. We all just sat around (well, I lounged around trying to look graceful, lol) and we all talked girly shop - hair, makeup, etc. I can't wait to shoot again!

This week - Decadent Dame mastermind Cayla!!

Hello again my lovelies! Amidst all the hubub about the Burlesque Hall of Fame, it took me some time to gather my thoughts and get you our next interview! La Divina has been keeping us DFW gals updated during her glamorous foray to the city of Sin via Twitter, go follow her and keep up with what's new... La Divina Productions in association with Bachelor Pad Magazine will be hosting another HUGE show July 18th at the Lakewood... KITTEN DEVILLE will be headlining... but enough shop talk! Let's get down to Business... Fascinators, that is! This woman is the Queen of Craft, with a bevy of beauties such as Ginger Valentine, Courtney Crave, Honey Cocoa Bordeauxx (and myself :D) wearing her art all around town and to our shows. So, we recently sat down at a charming cafe in Big D, and whilst pouring over a delicious vintage hat (Squee!) and sequin appliques, she was kind enough to answer some questions! 1.) When did you decide to get into the fashion side of burlesque?

I actually was not a big fan of fashion until after I hit 20. When I was very young I was in the little girl beauty pageants, which led to me rebelling against the idea of "pretty" during my teenage years. Not sure when it happened, but along the lines I discovered that I really enjoyed dressing to the nines and hitting the town. My own fashion sense developed greatly over the years. I came to really enjoy the classics, a nice set of stilettos and a pencil skirt a great for damn near any occasion. I started noticing fascinators in photos and movies of old, as well as on the pretty heads of modern women. I loved the look, but when I searched online I found them to often be quite expensive. I just didn't have the money to spend $100 and up on these types of things! I finally got around to making my own designs as Xmas gifts for friends in 2008 because I was too broke to actually buy things for them. I used my friends as my inspiration, making items that would suit their looks and sense of style. I had a lot of fun, and the girls really responded well to it. After that, I figured why the hell not?

2.) Any story behind the name?

When I was deciding on a name, it was very important to me to give a good sense in mind of the style that I design. I wanted people to hear my name, and have a mental image. Something along the lines of a classy woman of times past, a lady that would walk into a room and everyone pauses to take her in. The sense of pulling in a touch of finery and decadence into everyday life. There's no reason why a woman's ensemble should stop at her neck, a beautiful painting always needs a beautiful frame.

My dad was pretty unhappy with the Dame portion of my name at first. He was born in 1943 so he was from the time where as school boys they'd taunt their female classmates by calling them Dames. In the movies of his childhood the gangsters would always call women Dames in a negative way. He's gotten over it in time, but for a while he tried to get me to change my mind. But I stuck true, once I had the name in mind there was no way I could change it, it was just too perfect.

3.) What kind of things can you find at your tables (merch tables or booths)?

Lots of stuff! I always stress out about having enough merchandise for my vending table, so I make sure to have lots of items in a wide variety.

Ok... so I have my feather fans, which are really pretty, soft, and hug the shape of the head. They always have some manner of jewelry piece on it, sometimes very vintage items, sometimes more modern. Whatever catches my eye and looks good. (You can see that I love mine.)
Flowers!! Lots of colors, lots of sizes, some just with the flower, some with jewelry in the center, and some with feathers to give a bit of movement and height. My most famous one right now is Rose-Zilla, it's HUGE!! It's seriously the size of my hand span, and has long arrowhead feathers sticking out in a variety of directions. It hasn't found the perfect head yet, but I know it will one day.
Feather fascinators, which are clips of a variety of sizes, from 2 inches to 7 inches. Lots of pretty colors, a variety of feather types, and some very pretty vintage jewelry. These have lots of movement and are sure to be the perfect topper to a beautiful outfit.
Mini-clips, which are my grab bag type of item, they're only $5 and the perfect item for someone who likes a bit of flare without going over the top.
Pasties, ooh la la! For the professional tassel twirlers and for those that like to play the part while at home. I package my pasties with a couple pieces of double sided tape, toupee tape to be specific! Gotta have them be ready for wear ;)
Vintage hats, I so love my growing collection of vintage hats. I spend a ton of time going to estate sales around town to find high quality beautiful hats that were owned by women that loved them, so that I can send them off to other women that will love them just as much (if not more!).
Fascinators! I just started working on a new style, the classic disk pad fascinator. So much fun! Also a huge amount of work. These give me more options with color, texture, height, volume, style, etc. I've really enjoyed working on these, so far I've already done three custom ones for some of local performers to match their costumes. I love the fact that I can use vintage fabrics, trim, lace, and feathers as well as jewelry.
Me ;) I'm the tall girl with lots of hair, if you see me please stop by and say hello! I also come with lots of back stories about the items on my table, feel free to ask any questions and please pick up my designs and try them on. They're meant for heads, not tables, so they'll always look better on you than sitting on some dumb table

4.) What's the favorite piece you have made so far?

I'm continuously making new pieces that are my new favorites!! At this moment I have a larger ivory fascinator that I'm quite smitten with. I was already quite proud of it when I made it, but when I went down to Austin, TX to vend at the TX Burlesque Festival my love for this piece grew immensely. That Saturday I met a girl that's getting married this November, and already has her perfect wedding dress, an ivory number from the 1950s. Which just happens to perfectly match the ivory fascinator I had on sale that evening. The look in her eyes when she tried it on was so memorable. She truly felt absolutely beautiful, and it was so heart warming to me to see her feel that way. That look in a woman's eyes when she tries on one of my designs and has that instant moment of feeling beautiful, that is why I do what I do. This is the fascinator below...

5.) Where do you find inspiration for your pieces?

A while back I took a class at Richland College in Dallas based entirely on Film Noir, for me this was a whole new world of beautiful fashion that I was completely unaware of before. I really fell in love with the visuals of the Femme Fatale, who could walk into a room and truly own it. The Film Noir girls have been a huge inspiration for me in both my own fashion sense and the style that I want to create for my designs. I spend a lot of my late nights with TCM on my tv, I love watching the old movies! Just the other night I caught Judy Garland and Fred Astaire in Easter Parade, I loved it! So many beautiful dresses and hats, I get lots of ideas from watching movies like that one.

I also am finding a lot of joy out of designing something to match a specific outfit. I always enjoy challenges, so when ladies come to me asking for me to make them something specific, I always jump at the chance. There's some very creative women out there, so helping add my special touch to a fabulous outfit is always enjoyable.

6.) Anything you want to share with those who want to start their own business?

Best thing I'd say is to just get out there and do it, I know it took me a while to finally get around to making my stuff. I had in mind what I wanted to do, but actually sitting down and getting to work was a big step. You can't succeed if you don't try! My early items were not my best stuff, but it takes time and practice to get good at anything. Also, networking is a huge part of my business, I always chat up my stuff to anyone I find that's willing to sit still long enough. I'm quite thankful for my family for supporting my work and helping me through the early steps, also my friends who have been coming out of the woodwork to help in any way possible. Having a good support system is such a big help when starting up a new business.

Seriously, her designs are unique, beautiful, and withstand pressure... I have taken my fascinator EVERYWHERE (and places I won't tell her, becasue she'll wiggle her finger at me!) and it still looks amazing. This is what happens when V stays up late... For those of you who want to get started in burlesque, or just want to brush up on what "classic burlesque" is... Here are Burlesque Baby's Top Ten Moves!

Here is Shimmy’s Top Ten List to be an Authentic 1950s Pin-Up.

1. The Tease. The tease is a very well known move that all burlesque dancers and pin-up models do even if they don't know they are doing it. It is performed by teasing the audience or the camera into believing that they are going to see something great. Of course, these models are great, but it is the subtle nuances that leave the viewer wondering what comes next…

2. The Flirt. This move is something that nearly all girls do, even if it is done subconsciously. That is what pin-up is all about...flirting! Being coy and fun, jesting with the audience and playing games is the hallmark of a pin-up. Flirting with the men (and women in some cases) is why people come to the show.

3. The “Did I Do That?” Look. This move is the facial expression that you see most often on the women’s faces when they are on stage. Apart from an ear to ear grin, the fake look of shock and the pursed lips that seem to say "Did I Do That?" is the facial expression of choice for pin-ups. It’s as if being on stage (or in front of the camera) beckons them do things that ordinarily they would never do!

4. The Unaware or Accidental Exposé. The model or dancer will show something “accidentally,” (a flash of bloomers or a thigh through a slit skirt, perhaps). This move is 100% intentional, but to be pulled off, must look as though it is a complete surprise. This move is most likely followed by #3, the "Did I Do That?" look.

5. The Knowing or Intentional Exposé. This move says, “I know I'm showing you something sexy and I like it!” These are the planned out moves that the dancer fully lives up to and owns. She might shake the upper half or shake the lower half, but surely an act that is this sexy and bold and cannot be mistaken for an accident.

6. The Quiver. The quiver is the technical term for a vigorous shaking of the bosom. It is most effective when done in time with the music and is usually done at the end of a routine to add a little flavor. It is the icing – or the cherries – on top of the cake!

7. The Shimmy. This is my personal favorite move (I'll give you three guesses why…). This move is used in more disciplines than just burlesque. It is very popular in Middle Eastern dance, which is where I found it. It is not widely know that the shimmy has more to do with the knees than with the actual hips. The shimmy can be achieved by first standing with feet slightly apart in preparation of the second part of the move. With feet slightly parted, bend your right knee, ever so slightly, and then your left knee. Do this in rapid succession and you might just surprise yourself at your ability to shimmy! Just be aware that to gain the namesake, you have to be very skilled.

8-9. The Bump and Grind. The bump and grind has earned a bad rap in the last couple of decades because the term has been misused. The bump is not a stripper move to be used in the back rooms of clubs while giving a lap dance. The bump is simply a shift of the hip in time with the music. Music of the fifties used big drum beats and the bump was used to coincide with the drums.

The grind has really gotten a bad name, but it is just as harmless as the bump. The grind is simply a circular rotation of the hips. Sadly, in recent days it has taken on an almost perverse sexual meaning. The grind can be found in many different kinds of dancing just like the shimmy. There is a move in Belly Dancing very similar to the grind, known as the Figure Eight.

10. The Wink. Last but certainly not least is the wink! This move can be very sexy if executed correctly. It is used to tease your target audience....men! If used in a smaller venue it can be applied to one man or, in larger venues, the wink will read to every man in the audience as if you are doing a special show just for him. This is a very important move when it comes to burlesque and modeling. Making your audience feel special is a priority to be successful actor, model, or dancer. If used in conjunction with some of these other moves a burlesque dancer might just get a standing ovation!

As you know, DFW is BRIMMING with absolutely lovely talent... and I want to show you another side to the shimmy and the sequins, the women behind the feather fans and the red lipstick. My first gal is one of my favorite performers, and she has made QUITE the name for herself - and what's more important, is that she has done it herself... she books herself, manages her shoots... there's pretty much nothing this gal can't do (she's even taught me the art of the bump and grind!)

A former ballerina turned burlesque dancer and instructor, Ginger is an award-winning performer and the premiere model for the Dallas Dr. Sketchy chapter, modeling for them many times. She has shimmied in bars, clubs and historical theaters all over Dallas. In 2009, Ginger launched her Burlesque Charm School where she teaches classic striptease to a variety of levels. She also traveled to Chicago to perform in Michelle L'amour's Bells and Whistles show benefiting the Burlesque Hall of Fame. In addition to teaching and performing, Miss Valentine writes her own blog and has her own product line in the works with Tara to the T. She is also the news reporter for the burlesque blog, The Candy Pitch.

I caught her recently for a few minutes in between her preparations for her new round of burlesque classes at the Girl's Room, meetings with Tara to the T about her FAB new line, her new posas reporter for the blog ...

VV - What drew you into burlesque?

GV - The fat paycheck of course! Ha-ha. I've always had an interest in performing and glamour, but two documentaries really turned me on to striptease: Liz Goldwyn's Pretty Things, and Dierdre Timmons' A Wink and a Smile. Also, I watched a lot of musicals growing up and was really inspired by Gypsy and Cabaret.

VV - What do you enjoy most about being a burlesque dancer/pinup model?

GV - At this point, I'm excited about different opportunities and meeting new people. I really want to apply and travel to a lot of the national events such as Burly Con (Seattle), Toronto Burlesque Festival, Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekend (Las Vegas) and so on. In addition to traveling, the creative outlet really satiates my need to bedazzle and decorate. I just love the whole creative process.

VV - There is so much you do in and around the community, it's astounding, like your burlesque class for example. Tell us more about it!

GV - I love teaching my classes! I am so grateful to Karyn at the Girls Room and my students for supporting my dream. I teach various levels of burlesque striptease. Graduates of my program learn the bump and grind and shimmy, boa work and how to remove gloves, bras and panties. I also give demos on applying fake eyelashes, hair and makeup. My students get a brief introduction to burlesque history and we talk about current performers. I always encourage my students to attend local shows. I tease them that it's for extra credit. Someday I'd love to produce a showcase for my advanced students. I also do act review for performers as well.

VV - What inspires you?

GV - Anything and everything. Music, shoes, colors, food, people, animals. So many things trigger ideas and excitement. It's hard to keep my mind quiet, and I usually carry a small notebook with me everywhere so I can jot down my crazy ideas.

VV - Tell us a little about some of the most memorable moments you've had this past year...

GV - One was last month in Chicago on stage for the curtain call at the Bells and Whistles show. I got a pasty-to-pasty hug from Michelle L'amour for a job well done. Also an alum of my Charm School came to me with tears in her eyes telling her that I'd helped her accept herself and feel beautiful. It might sound kind of cheesy here in this blog, but at the time, it was a really special moment that reminded me that teaching is a calling for me, not just performing. And of course, winning an award at Hot Rods and Heels was pretty special too.

VV - You do burlesque full time, what is a typical day like for you?

GV - I try to avoid typical days as much as possible, but I do have somewhat of a routine. I usually get to my computer around 10 a.m. and I answer emails. Then I'll do some marketing and promotional work for my classes and/or any upcoming shows. When the phone rings, it will be photographers, producers or my sponsor Tara. Sometimes the phone doesn't ring at all, and some days I feel like I'm on the phone all day. After I've updated my blog and other profile pages, I rehearse. I try to rehearse daily. I'm used to being really disciplined from ballet, and I try to apply the same mentality to burlesque. Some days, I'll run errands, or go to Tara's studio to work on product. In the evenings, I teach. Also, I have meetings and photo shoots to attend and sometimes interviews to fill out (like today). I'm learning to take time off when I have it. It's a sweet life.

Ginger is such the sweetheart - please make sure and catch her at an upcoming show! She will be featured at next months' La Divina Production ATOMIC FROLIC, in association with Bachelor Pad Magazine, over at the Lakewood on July 18th. In fact, I will be the panty wrangler! Kitten DeVille will be flying in to highlight the show, along with Rose Darling, Black Mariah, La Divina, Angela Ryan, and the music stylings of Ricki Derek!
